An endearing tale about how El Corte Inglés was born. Read on…
El Corte Inglés, which is the largest chain of department stores in Europe, and a cornerstone of Spain’s commercial sector. It takes its name from a small tailor’s shop founded in the 19th century in the heart of Madrid and purchased by Ramón Areces in 1935. Soon after that, Mr. Areces acquired a building in the nearby Calle Preciados, and implemented the definitive department system in the 1940s.
The 60s were a key period for expansion with new centers opening in Barcelona, Seville and Bilbao, as well as Madrid. The group grew rapidly until the middle of the 90s, expanding to other provincial capitals. In 2001, El Corte Inglés opened its first department store outside Spain, in neighboring Lisbon.
