This platform gives me the opportunity to meet so many interesting people. I had the good fortune of meeting one such person. Jalal Luqman. An Emirati artist and galerist based in Abu Dhabi, Luqman specializes in digital art.
Reputed to be one of the most provocative Emirati artists of his time, he manages to mystify his followers not only on the subject matter he paints but also in the manner in which they are created.
Jalal Luqman was born and raised in the capital. He started ‘Ghaf Gallery’ with his friend in Abu Dhabi in 2006, which plays hosts to various exhibitions to promote art and culture in the UAE. The gallery also promotes emerging artists and those who haven’t had the ability to exhibit in the UAE.
Luqman is the pioneer in this region to combine metal with digital art. He uses digital paints from more than seven to eight computer programs as well as traditional mediums such as acrylics, charcoal and pencils, before he embeds them in twisted industrial metals. The result? Mind jolting images that seem to transcend the boundaries of the frame. His work borders on modern digital to dark gothic sculptures resulting in unique paintings that are confessions of the soul.
However, his latest exhibition, ‘Thanks for the Sunshine’, is a departure from Jalal Luqman’s oft-aggressive and mysterious portrayal of his work.
Watch what he has to say about his latest exhibition, his gallery in Abu Dhabi and more.
Also, watch this space for consumate digital artist Sumayyah Al Suwaidi.
